About Pinyin System

Hanyu Pinyin (Chinese Pinyin) is developed for indicating Chinese pronunciation in an alphabetical way. The Pinyin system consists of alphabets, initials, finals and tones. There are altogether 26 alphabets, 21 initials, 39 finals and 4 tones (not including "no tone") in mandarin Chinese.

By using the latin simbols, pinyin helps a foreigner to pronounce and remember mandarin syllables easily. However, as certain pronunciations are "unique" in Chinese, it will sound quite odd if saying them without listening to the correct ones beforehand, not to say mandarin tones.

About Pinyin Card

Realang Pinyin Cards are designed to help you getting familiar with the combination of initials and finals in pinyin system.

Some combination, for example "biu", do not appear in pinyin system, as there's no such pronunciation in mandarin Chinese, and you won't see this kind of card here. Whereas for some others like the following:

you see the second tone of "bei" missing. This is because such pronunciation either exists only in dialects or appear just in ancient written Chinese, therefore nearly not used in modern mandarin.
